Revolutionary Breakthrough: Grow Exclusive Purple Tomatoes at Home Now

Gardeners in the United States seeking a colorful twist in their harvest can now cultivate genetically modified purple tomatoes. Norfolk Plant Sciences, a UK-based team of scientists, has developed a new tomato variety bioengineered to contain purple antioxidants called anthocyanins. These antioxidants, commonly found in fruits like blueberries, blackberries, and eggplants, are present in both the flesh and skin of this Purple Tomato. Norfolk Healthy Produce, a subsidiary of Norfolk Plant Sciences, is now offering the seeds for this unique variety for home gardening in the US.

The development of the purple tomato began in 2008 when Professor Cathie Martin, the lead scientist on the project and co-founder of Norfolk Plant Sciences, made a breakthrough in bioengineering. After passing regulatory processes with the US Department of Agriculture, Food and Drug Administration, and US Environmental Protection Agency, the purple tomato seeds are now commercially available in the US. Professor Martin expresses her excitement about American gardeners being able to grow these tomatoes in the upcoming 2024 season.

The Purple Tomato was designed not only for its unique color but also to provide a sustainable and nutritious food option. Anthocyanins, responsible for the purple hue, offer various health benefits, including anti-inflammatory properties, according to the bioengineering company. Consumer research from Norfolk Healthy Produce indicates that 80% of surveyed individuals are interested in eating and growing these purple tomatoes despite being genetically modified organisms (GMO).

Dr. Nathan Pumplin, CEO of Norfolk Healthy Produce, acknowledges the abundance of organic and non-GMO options in the market but emphasizes that their genetically modified tomato is an additional choice for consumers looking for something different. He highlights the versatility of the Purple Tomato, stating that it can be grown alongside other favorite varieties in personal gardens. The introduction of this unique tomato variety aims to provide both visual appeal and health benefits to gardening enthusiasts in the US.
