For added protection, wearing a washable underlayer, like a T-shirt or blouse, can prevent body oils and sweat from transferring onto the wool garment.
When it is time to wash wool, the key is using cold water and a detergent specifically formulated for wool. If a wool garment is labeled machine-washable, it’s safe to proceed, especially with a front-load washer that offers a gentle tumbling action. Items labeled hand-wash can often also be machine-washed on a delicate or wool cycle. Selecting the lowest spin speed on the washer helps prevent unnecessary stretching or fiber damage. Knitted items must be dried flat to avoid stretching, while woven wool can be hung on sturdy hangers to air dry.
Under no circumstances should wool garments ever be placed in a hot dryer. The heat will shrink and distort the fibers, potentially ruining the item.
