First Question to Ask Before Choosing Kitchen Marble

Marble kitchen countertops are the epitome of luxury and sophistication, elevating any kitchen to a whole new level. However, choosing the right marble for your kitchen can be quite the daunting task. With an array of colors, finishes, and vein patterns available, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed about where to start.

When exploring marble options, many people first consider color, as a bold marble countertop can create a striking focal point. Yet, according to renowned interior designer Nate Berkus, there’s a more critical feature to ponder: the ‘busyness’ of the marble.

In a recent Instagram video, Nate explained that the energy or liveliness of the marble significantly impacts the overall ambiance of the kitchen. This, he says, should be the primary consideration when selecting marble countertops, advocating for a bold and daring choice in his own home.

“I believe the first question to ask when choosing marble for your kitchen isn’t about color, but rather the busyness of the stone,” Nate states, showcasing the sleek and sophisticated kitchen he shares with his husband, Jeremiah Brent. “Consider how much veining you want and the energy it brings. Marble isn’t just a static feature; it adds life and character to your space. While clean white or gray marble is perfect for minimalist kitchens, marble with intense veining can bring warmth and dynamism to a more personalized space.”

Nate shares his personal experience of living with a highly veined marble countertop and backsplash, expressing that he still appreciates its dynamic look. “As you can see, the stone in our kitchen has significant veining, contrast, and movement – and that makes a statement,” he explains. No matter the color, the veining and contrast will dominate the aesthetic, so it’s crucial to consider how you want your kitchen to feel. With natural light, white cabinets, and thoughtful countertop styling, Nate and Jeremiah’s kitchen exudes timeless elegance, although their approach may not suit every home’s style.

“You need to decide if you want a statement piece or something that blends seamlessly with the rest of the finishes,” Nate advises. “I’ve seen people express fatigue over busy marbles in kitchens, but I’m not tired of it. However, there’s a valid case for both approaches.” Choose a marble finish you love and one that will stand the test of time. Kitchen countertops are a significant investment, so your choice should be enduring. If you’re drawn to vibrant, eye-catching designs, then busy veining is likely for you. If you prefer classic and clean aesthetics, opt for a more understated marble.

Ultimately, selecting the perfect marble for your kitchen involves balancing personal taste with long-term satisfaction. Whether you lean towards bold or classic designs, ensuring that your choice reflects your style and meets your practical needs will create a kitchen you’ll love for years to come.
